A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet these probabilities had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in positions right before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A bill presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
