An Account of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor

During the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange lodging upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering in the direction of the casino, believing I could pass the evening in a place operating all night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at an interview the next day, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

I must have looked lost as a female student spotted me loitering in the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I explained my situation and immediately she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one of the sandwiches she brought back her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and a secure location and secure to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman letting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. At that time I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her act of kindness tenfold. The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
