A charity drive is aiming to send a traditional song from Palestine to the Christmas number one spot. The effort seeks to send support to people in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian artistic heritage.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a chance to support Palestinians during the holidays. He noted the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“It would be fantastic if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I’m not gonna be completely disappointed if it fails to, Christmas singles are a thing unto themselves.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who sings on the reimagining of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's defiant core message.
“The song holds a very special place for countless listeners,” Barghouti explained. “It’s basically saying that I would choose to perish with honor than spend my life without freedom. This is the primary message of the song; we desire to exist a life of dignity that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The track was produced in the wake of a solidarity show held in September. Initially planned to be done as a live recording, the performance was shelved during the concert due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of performers featured on Lullaby encompasses a group of well-known figures from the music world. All were part of the September show, which successfully generated a substantial amount for relief efforts.
Lullaby was crafted by a trio of producers and composers. The song showcases a mix of the heritage language with new English lyrics.
The group managing the campaign have clarified that their goal is to generate maximum funds for a specific fund. These resources will be distributed to projects in Palestine through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“We haven't set a rigid aim,” a spokesperson explained. “We aim for as much as possible. Naturally, the higher the total, the greater the impact. All proceeds are directed out to Gaza.”
The context in the region was characterized as its widespread damage, with a overwhelming percentage of property said to be levelled or seriously harmed.
“In that context, a few million is unlikely to make that much difference. But I think the significant factor is above all raising awareness for this issue and demonstrating that another narrative exists.”
The track is scheduled for release on Friday. Additionally, a complete film of the charity concert will be made accessible to view on a digital service from the 19th of December.
