The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
