Moscow's Attack on Kyiv Leaves Fatalities, Power Outage for a Large Portion of the City

A devastating missile and drone assault by Russian forces on the capital of Ukraine has led to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 37 more, while disrupting power to the western part of the city, stranding over half a million residents without power.

Large-Scale Assault Underscores Ukraine's Need for International Support

Nearly 600 drones and over three dozen missiles were fired into the nation in an offensive that Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized highlighted the critical requirement for western assistance with air defence, as well as economic and diplomatic aid.

"It is essential that we act without losing a moment to ensure that there are sufficient missiles for our air defence systems, and that everything necessary for our defense and for deterring Russia is in place," the Ukrainian president declared.

Victims and Attack Waves Documented

Authorities confirmed that a third person was fatally injured in the areas around the capital, with multiple phases of strikes audible across Kyiv. The initial wave began at about 1am, and a second one at early morning, before an all-clear was given at nearly 9.30am.

Ukrainian Retaliatory Attack on Russian Oil Refinery

The armed forces of Ukraine announced that it had struck the Afipsky fuel plant in Krasnodar Krai, one of the largest in the region, causing a fire at the location. This plant supplies diesel and jet fuel to Russian forces fighting in the conflict.

Strategic Effort to Break Ukraine's Resistance

Russia is pursuing a strategy to shatter the country's civil resistance this winter by targeting its power grid as the war approaches its third anniversary. These strikes occur amid a series of prominent political figures being involved in a graft controversy.

Government Turmoil and Departures

In recent developments, the chief of staff, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's key assistant, was forced to resign after his apartment was inspected by anti-corruption officials probing a bribery operation. Two other ministers have already been fired, and the supposed mastermind of the scheme, an longtime associate of Zelenskyy, has left the nation.

The Ukrainian leader announced that he would restructure the office of the president—which Yermak ran as a gatekeeper to the president—amidst rumors about who might lead it or how it could be restructured.

Calls for Fresh Leadership and Diplomatic Issues

An opposition MP urged the leader to appoint a former military chief, the country's ambassador to the UK, to a key role. A Ukrainian politician wrote in a social media post that "an individual trusted by the armed forces, citizens and international partners is precisely what is required now."

Zaluzhnyi has been considered a potential rival to Zelenskyy, though allies of the diplomat suggested they were uncertain he would consent if offered the role.

Talks and Global Situations

Yermak reportedly told media outlets that he was "heading to the battlefield" and was "prepared for any reprisals," though it was ambiguous how he might serve the armed forces. He added in a text message, "I am an honest and decent person."

Yermak headed the delegation over the recent weeks as Kyiv reacted to a pro-Russia proposal released by the White House. It called for that the nation leave Donetsk province and accept a broad pardon, and that the west remove restrictions imposed on Russia.

Negotiations stalled this week during the US Thanksgiving holiday, but are anticipated to resume soon. A Ukrainian delegation led by a security official, a top defense figure, has traveled to Washington, the president confirmed.

Ukraine has submitted a 19-point counter proposal, which has been shared with Russian authorities. In the coming days, Trump’s special envoy the diplomat is scheduled to visit in the Moscow, though few expect a significant progress, since recently the Moscow's leader, the Kremlin head, described the Ukrainian leadership as illegitimate.

Weakened Situation and Financial Struggles

Kyiv's standing is undermined by the graft controversy, easily the gravest domestic political crisis of Zelenskyy’s presidency, while Russia aims that its ongoing strikes and a possible economic downturn for the country will weaken its resolve.

Ukraine is anticipating that EU leaders will approve a €140bn assistance package backed by frozen Moscow funds to stabilize its finances from the coming year, but resistance from a key EU member, where the majority of funds is located, has dimmed expectations of securing a deal by the end of the year.
