New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
