The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the need to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside within me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
