Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke

Personalities from both sides of the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Detention

Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant amount.

A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.

“What a appalling and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
