Jon Ruben confessed to 17 criminal counts at the courthouse on Friday

A person who laced sweets with tranquilliser and distributed them to children at a summer camp in Leicestershire has confessed to sexual crimes against two boys who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from that region, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he denied a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was kept in jail prior to a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he operated.

The man engaged in a "treat game" with the minors, the prosecutor said, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the man had played this game with the boys "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She stated Ruben had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had concerns in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepchild had concerns about what was going on, justifiably.

"They decided to have a look in the individual's items."

The legal counsel said items including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were discovered, and his stepson notified the authorities about his concerns.

She said Ruben went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that point," she added.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, previously told that it was reviewing the police response of the situation.

The prosecutor said the children were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement a second time.

She explained the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
