When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning best player.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
