A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation grappling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by three individuals, with one shot at him before running away.
The motive of the shooting is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, as per the official statement.
Law enforcement revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had spent several hours at the property supervising the implementation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, according to reports.
"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.
Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and wearing what looked like a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the incident.
Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were found at the location.
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to come forward.
"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.
His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the family was struggling to process his death.
"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about topics not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the community to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an deeply traumatic time, above all for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a South African TV network.
