The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Lead to Boost Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Reception

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full content from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to heart and revamped the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having spent the recent years developing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Head

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Face the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and tests that change every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."

The game lacks an official debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can expect additional details as production progresses.
