The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner

This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Support

The entrepreneur announced through social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions

The founder stated that he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
