LeBron James was aware his historic run of putting up 10+ points was at risk. In that crucial moment, however, it was not his focus.
The correct basketball play meant distributing the ball – so he did. With that selfless act, his remarkable run was over.
LeBron's staggering run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season double-digit scoring performances ended this past Thursday, when the league's career points king was limited to eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus the Toronto Raptors. He provided the game-winning assist, finding teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a three-pointer as time expired.
“Nothing,” James stated in response regarding the conclusion of his run. “The team got the victory.”
James could have sought to clinch the contest – and extended the streak – with the last shot, but he chose to pass to Hachimura on the wing. Hachimura made the shot, with LeBron exulted with his hands in the air.
It's about playing basketball the proper way. Always make the smart play,” James explained. That has always been how I operate. It's how I was taught the game. I've played that way my whole career.”
“LeBron is acutely aware exactly how many points he has at any point,” stated Lakers coach the coach. “He did it like he’s done throughout his career.”
He returned to the floor for the final time with under five and a half minutes to go, the result along with the historic run both hanging in the balance. His tally was six points on 3 for 15 from the field at that juncture.
He managed a basket with 1:46 left to knot the score then missed a 14-footer with one minute to go that would have gotten him to ten points.
He avoided taking one more attempt – even though he had a chance. Austin Reaves gave James the ball as time wound down, yet LeBron opted to dish it off instead.
The spirits of the game, when you play it the right way, they often repay you,” Redick stated.
This incredible run began on Jan. 6, 2007. It was easily the longest double-digit streak the league has ever seen: MJ had 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run of 575 games.
LeBron is such an unselfish player,” noted teammate Jake LaRavia.
He simply plays the game of basketball. He could have shot but due to the player he is and his personality off the court, he made the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and secured the victory.”
Scoring in double figures had typically been an afterthought early in the final period. During James’s streak, he had reached ten points entering the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.
However, two of those rare single-digit games through three quarters had happened recently: He recorded nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks on 28 November, then had six before the fourth quarter versus the Suns earlier in the week.
He succeeded in extend the streak against the Suns. The very next outing, it was over – but he still rejoiced regardless.
“I always just make the best play. That comes naturally, no matter what,” James declared. When you make the right play, the basketball gods forever giving back to me.”
