The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
