The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
