Three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffered a "devastating" knee injury while the Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 against the Heat.

Jokic sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half following an inadvertent collision with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

His teammate landed on the foot of Jokic, who immediately collapsed to the floor clutching his leg.

The veteran player, who is leading the league season in boards and assists, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the contest prior to suffering the setback.

The player will undergo an scan on the following day to assess the severity of the injury.

"Instantly, he knew something was wrong," stated Nuggets head coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player that suffers an injury, that's difficult, especially a player as important as Jokic. We will know more on Tuesday."

"We'll move on as a team. Obviously, right now, I am focused just about him personally and the disappointment of experiencing something like that."
